The rate of annual change recorded by the Index of Consumer Price Index (CPI) for January was 0.1%, increasing 0.5 percentage points over the figure recorded the previous month. This result extends the trend of increase in the rate of change which began from November 2009.
The monthly variation observed between December 2009 and January 2010 was 0.3%, up 0.2 pp from the previous month. Since the average change in the last twelve months stood at 0.5%, decreasing 0.5 pp compared to the results observed in January.
In the classes of goods and services (+6.9%), furnishings, household equipment and maintenance of housing (+5.7%), clothing and footwear, alcoholic beverages and tobacco (+2.0%) were observed the most significant positive changes. But communications (-11.2%), transport (-9.1%) and recreation and culture (-5.4%) recorded negative values.
The classes of food and non-alcoholic beverages (+0.7%) and Miscellaneous goods and services (+0.3%) recorded positive monthly changes more significant. Moreover, the classes of Transport (-0.8%), clothing and footwear (-0.5%), Alcoholic beverages and tobacco, accessories, household equipment and maintenance of housing (-0.1%), recorded values negative rates of change monthly.
The level of the subgroups, the most significant monthly variations in prices were in the sugar, fresh fruit and confectionery, fish, sea transport of passengers, and jewelery, jewelery, watches and their repair. The major decreases occurred in the air transport of passengers, vegetables, including potatoes and other tubers, oils and fats, and small electrical appliances.
The mean of 12 months the CPI decreases in total 0.5 percentage points compared to the result of December 2009. Regionally, there was a positive monthly variation in all the islands: Santo Antão (+0.7%), S. Vicente (+0.3%) and Santiago (+0.2%), and the island has a mountain range above the monthly CPI National.
On the annual basis, the index of Santiago showed a variation higher than the national average of 0.1 percentage points, while December to this part of the difference observed compared to that average has increased. Santo Antao and S. Vincent recorded a rate of change negative (-0.1% and -0.5%, respectively), lower at -0.2 pp and -0.6 pp, respectively, the CPI National.
