Situated 950 miles south of the Canaries and 300 miles west of Senegal on the African mainland, Cape Verde is rightly regarded as one of the top destinations to catch Atlantic blue marlin, and among the best marlin destinations worldwide. We operate from the town of Mindelo on the island of Sao Vincente in the northwest archipelago.
The biggest marlin landed (and first Grander) in Cape Verde was caught aboard one of our boats and weighed a staggering 1,093 lbs. This fish was also the biggest marlin worldwide of 1998 (IGFA, 1999). In more recent years, we have both released and lost significantly bigger fish. The average weight of marlin you can expect to catch is between 200-350 lbs, though we regularly catch fish in excess of 500 lbs.
There are large numbers of marlin here too: in 2003, 89 blue marlin were caught in 103 days aboard the "HAPPY HOOKER". Twice we have won the prestigious AFTCO Captain of the Year Award for Atlantic Blue Marlin: in 2004, by Capt. Berno Niebuhr, and again in 2005 by Capt. Simon Bracey. This award is presented annually for the most number of fish tagged and released. The main season for marlin is from March through to October although marlin are also caught during the winter.
Other fish often caught here are wahoo to about 80lbs and yellowfin tuna in excess of 200lbs. Later in the season, you may also catch white marlin, spearfish, Atlantic sailfish, Dorado and Big-eye Thuna. Shark fishing is also good here, especially for tiger shark, and we can make special arrangements for shark fishing trips.
Once we were told that there were not great opportunities of fishing in Sal because the fishing sharks were small. Instead later on we discover how the fishing was very consistant infact there were the nurse, the bull and just outside, you can also find the tiger to await our baits. From the beach it is possible to practice an amazing sur f casting both going in the beautiful east side, vith lots of waves or going in the other direction, always calm but subject to large currents. Bream, bream, trevally, various types of esmoregal (amberjack), bonefish and many types of sharks can be your usual prey. Not to forget the appalling Croaker and exceptional Rajiformes. From the cliff you can fish around because before us there is a deep sea and drumming for experts. Can get a grouper, like a tuna or dolphin fish topped with scary jack coming to spinning. A paradise for those who love the thrill! In trolling with live and lead keeper rarely stay more than ten minutes without an attack that empty a reel while pulling in a conventional way we can take yellowfin tuna, sailfish and if you really want groped the adventure, the legendary marlin.
