CRIOULO THE CAPEVERDEAN LANGUAGE

A more accurate description of this language is "Cape Verdean Creole, but in daily use, the language is simply called ‘crioulo’ by its speakers. The name 'Capeverdian' or 'Capeverdian language "has been proposed for when the language was about to be standardized.

The Creole Capeverdian is of particular importance for the study of crioulística the fact that this is one of the few the creole (still talked) more old , as the Portuguese-based creole with the largest number of native speakers, most studied, and because one of the few Creole in the process of becoming an official language.

The Creole Capeverdian is also of importance for the diachronic study of English that the Creole have kept a lexicon, a phonology and semantics of some of the Portuguese secs. XV to XVII.

Despite the small area, this insularity has caused each of the nine islands develop an own way of speaking Creole. Each of these nine forms is rightly a different dialect, but the academic in Cape Verde tend to call them "variants".

Such variants can be grouped into two major varieties. In the south we have two that include the variants from Brava, Fogo, Santiago and May. In the North we have the two variants of Barlavento which comprising variants of Boa Vista, Sal, São Nicolau, São Vicente and Santo Antao. The authorities consider the “Crioulo” language in Cape Verde Creole as a single language, and not as different languages.

From a linguistic variants are the most important of Fogo, Santiago, São Nicolau and Santo Antao, and any deep study of the Creole should take into account at least these four variants. Are the only islands that were slaves directly from Africa, and islands are the linguistic features that have more conservative and more distinct from each other.

From a social point of view the most important variations are those of Santiago and São Vicente, and any study of mild Creole should take into account at least these two variants. These are variants of the two main urban centers (Praia and Mindelo), are the variations with the highest number of speakers and are variants that have a tendency glotofagista on neighboring variants.
